Welcome to Bowdon Hockey Juniors!

We welcome children from age 4-18 and are proud to see so many boys and girls enjoying their hockey.  Our aim is to balance inclusion and access with performance to enable every player to achieve their goals, whatever level. We now have over 400 junior members split across Minis (Reception – Year 3), Bowdon Bears (Years 4-6), Junior teams (Years 7-9), age group squads (Years 7-13) and senior teams. More information is below and also on our separate Primary age and Secondary age hockey pages.

During the 2020-21 season, we worked very hard to sustain every opportunity possible for our Juniors to continue to play hockey safely and enjoyably within the England Hockey COVID guidance.

2022-23 SEASON

TRAINING

Training schedule to be confirmed.

PLAYING PRINCIPLES

Players develop at different rates and it is most important that they continue to enjoy their hockey, irrespective of what level they are playing at. We work hard to balance development with ensuring players are able to play with peers so they can sustain and make new friendships. To sustain quality of training and give equal access to all, we also operate with a number cap in each age group.

Therefore throughout primary hockey, we expect players to play at their age group level, unless a clear exception is agreed by the player, parent and lead (not volunteer) coach.

When players move into secondary age, a mixed range of year 7-9 players will play together in ability groups in Badgers and Beavers teams while developing as a gender/age squad with peers as part of U12 and U14 age group teams. Coaches will work closely with Dom Maguire, the Junior Development Lead, to ensure that individuals are given opportunities as fit their ability. From year 9, they will be phased into suitable adult teams, once the player, parent and lead coach is comfortable that the player is ready.

Keen players are also encouraged, if they would like to, take part in England Hockey pathway trials and training. These are known as ‘Junior Development Centre – JDC’ and ‘Junior Academy Centre – JAC’ leading ultimately to ‘Performance Centre – PC’ – although this framework is currently changing – you can read more about this here. More information on the England Hockey Player Pathway can be found here.

VOLUNTEERS

If you think you could help in ANY way with the hockey section next season, please get in touch. You don’t need to know anything about hockey! For example, we need people to do team co-ordination, membership management, communications, website updates, organising social events, managing the pre-loved kit sales, fundraising, organising friendlies/fixtures etc

For any queries, please contact the Junior Chair, Julie Saunders.
